Position/What you do at U of R?Mariya Cyriac

I am a PhD student in the Tracer lab, with Dr. Erin Black.

Where are you from?

Alleppey, a city in Kerala, India. Also called the ‘Venice of the East’, it is surrounded by backwaters, canals and beaches. 

What got you interested in Earth and Environmental Sciences?

Growing up in Alleppey on the southwest coast of India. I realized the impact of Indian monsoon and oceans on the economy and livelihood of the region. I became curious about the Indian monsoon and its interrelation with the climate system and environment. This fascination kindled a desire to pursue a career in marine science. 

What do you enjoy most about U of R?

I really enjoy the facilities in U of R, especially the libraries (Rush Rhees Library). 

Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?

I like spending time on doing craft items, making decorations out of materials like bottles, small pieces of clothes, pista shells, etc. I started making dream catchers out of curiosity, and later began creating small, customized works for friends.  

What is your idea of a perfect day?

A perfect day is a day with 8 hours of undisturbed sleep.
